Plenty of myth exists about having sex during menstrual period. It is dangerous. Dirty. Even forbidden. This myth primarily originated from religious and cultural taboos that forbid sex during menstruation.
This myth is just that – a myth! – a widely held but false belief or idea!
While having sex during your partner’s menstrual period may not be for you – it is important to be fully informed. So lets roll up our sleeves and clear up the mess this myth generated!
MYTH #1: WOMEN CAN'T GET PREGNANT IF THEY HAVE SEX DURING MENSTRUAL PERIOD
If you think having sex during period is a perfect contraceptive device – think again! No time of the month is 100% safe. Yes, it is true, the chances of getting pregnant if you have sex during periods are minimal – but not absolute. Unless both of you are ready to become a parent I wouldn’t advice playing what sounds like a Russian roulette!
MYTH #2: MENSTRUAL BLOOD IS HARMFUL FOR THE PENIS
This myth stems from a belief that menstrual blood is dirty. It is impure. It will harm penis if it came in contact with it. OH please! Menstrual blood is just a mixture of healthy blood and tissues that the body does not need. It is a by-product of lining that lines the uterus for pregnancy and is shed every month when the periods pass. So how is it harmful exactly? I’ll let you ponder that one.
MYTH #3: YOU CAN’T GET AIDS AND STDs
Wrong! If the woman is a carrier for HIV or other sexually transmitted diseases, having unprotected sex during menstrual period increases the risk. Menstrual blood is no different then semen or other body excretions that lead to contracting disease during unprotected sex! One word – condom!
MYTH #4: SEX DURING PERIOD CAN HARM THE UTERUS
This one is what I call a ‘freak out’ myth! When a period occurs, a small opening develops in the uterus to pass menstrual blood. Many people believe – hence ‘freak out’ – that the opening is so large that having sex can cause the penis to poke into the hole and injure the uterus! This is just isn’t possible. The opening is too small for the penis to enter. Relax! There is no harm to the uterus if you have sex during menstrual cycle.
Feeling squeamish? Still think having sex during periods is gross? The reality is many things that take place during intercourse can be perceived gross. Women get menstrual periods. Men ejaculate. People spit on body parts to create a lubricant. Some have slight urination during an orgasm. People fart during sex for god’s sake! It’s a mess sometimes, but so what! The best sex is usually is!
