Is there a cure for gender dysphoria?

Dr. Z addresses whether gender dysphoria can be cured. Gender dysphoria is a medical condition. Gender dysphoria is a psychological distress that a person feels when they're not in alignment with their assigned gender. As such, as a medical condition, it is painful, it is debilitating, it causes a lot of suffering, and it causes a lot of internal tension. It definitely makes life difficult if left untreated, if left untouched, if left in a state that it currently is for anybody who's struggling with gender dysphoria.

It is bound over time to either remain the same, to get slightly better (that will depend highly on coping skills the individual utilizes), but by far and large, it can also get worse—the pain, the tension, all of those symptoms, all of the distress.

For people who struggle with severe gender dysphoria (Dr. Z often talks about this—she often breaks down dysphoria into severe, mild, and almost more neutral or discomfort where people feel like it's almost not really there, and it's there but it's in a form of slight discomfort), for people who have gender dysphoria on the severe end of spectrum, in her experience it undoubtedly gets worse as people get older.

Watch this video as Dr. Z addresses whether gender dysphoria can be cured and the critical factor that determines the answer.
