Is There a RIGHT TIME for Breast Augmentation?
Dr. Z discusses when is a good time to get breast augmentation and shares tips on how to decide what size breast implants to go with.
In Dr. Z's experience working with trans women, breast augmentation often ends up being the last surgery if surgical transition is part of a person's goals. People often have either facial feminization as the first surgery (face gives tremendous dysphoria, passing is a priority for many) or genital surgery first (genitals give severe dysphoria). Breast augmentation tends to be last—probably 99% of people Dr. Z has worked with—for several reasons: breast size doesn't necessarily define a woman's identity, people wait to see what changes they can get naturally on feminizing hormones (combination of estrogen plus progesterone), and it's not difficult to schedule compared to other surgeries.
People decide to get breast augmentation for various reasons: the breast size achieved is still giving them dysphoria, the breast shape is more cone-shaped versus teardrop and makes them uncomfortable, or they feel like bigger breasts will help feminize the rest of their physique (making broad shoulders look smaller in comparison). Dr. Z herself as a clinician often recommends waiting for breast augmentation unless it gives a lot of dysphoria, because a lot of things might change—how you feel about your breasts, how you evolve, you may realize you don't even need it at all or want different sizing than you originally thought.
