The Frustrating Part of Gender Transition!

Dr. Z addresses what happens when the excitement of gender transition wears off—and yes, it does undeniably wear off for many people at a particular point. What does this mean? Is it telling you you're making a mistake? Should you stop?

When excitement wears off: For many starting with medical hormones, there's excitement—thrill, even joy—because you're finally doing something about your discomfort. You feel liberated, in control, free. This excitement continues through social transition, facial hair removal, and voice training. Each step feels new, fulfilling, and affirming, leading to more excitement.

Then the excitement is like a balloon losing air. It wears off.

When this happens: Usually at the mid-point of gender transition. You're doing things you're no longer excited about (electrolysis appointments become annoying, voice training practice feels tedious, growing hair out to an awkward length drives you nuts). Everything has plateaued—hormones gave incredible feelings initially, but now changes have slowed. You're maintaining things, maybe not much is changing, and you're not ready for other steps (or there are no other steps based on your goals).

In this video, Dr. Z addresses:

Why people seldom wonder "did I make a mistake?" during this period (they know transition is necessary). The questions that do come up: When will this period be over? How long will it last? When will I see myself? Why transition is not a straight line—it's a zigzag trajectory leading upward.
