The Terror of Presenting Authentically to People Who Know You
You can present authentically to strangers—go to the grocery store in a dress, bind your chest at a new job, use they/them with people you just met. And it's manageable, sometimes even empowering. But then you think about showing up differently to your partner of 15 years, your parents who've known you your entire life, your best friend since college—and you feel sheer terror.
After 20 years and 7,200+ assessments with trans and nonbinary adults, this is one of the most common struggles I see: being able to be yourself with new people but experiencing paralyzing anxiety about presenting differently to people who've known you for years. In this video, I break down why this is incomparably harder than presenting to strangers, the specific anxieties that create the terror, and nine concrete strategies that actually help manage the fear.
