Trans Women In Search of Perfect Vagina!
Almost every person I come across seeking vaginoplasty expresses a desire for The Perfect Vagina!
Interestingly, people seem to be less concerned with the organ's functionality and more with aesthetic looks.
Sometimes even having pictures of how they prefer the vulva to look, claiming only a selected few surgeons can get it right. Some even undergo several revisions to achieve The Perfect Vagina.
But what is The Perfect Vagina? Does it even exist?
Most importantly, what determines perfection?
Functionality?
Ability to orgasm?
Vaginal depth?
Appearance of the vulva?
Sensitivity to touch?
Having a background in sexuality, I am fully aware of the many faces of women's vaginas. I am also fully aware of how pornography has perpetuated an ideal not rooted in reality.
And yet, we keep desiring that which in essence is not realistic.
No! Some even demand perfection, which is so subjective, it becomes difficult to achieve.
Our expectation for The Perfect Vagina is often a socially perpetuated myth. A myth harmful to the relationship with our bodies.
It is important to have a real understanding and appreciation of the diversity inherent in our bodies. Having desires of how we want our bodies to look after the surgery. But having realistic expectations and understanding is the key!
To help decipher the myth, I turn my attention to Laura Dodsworth.
A photographer whose project, Womanhood, tells stories of 100 women and gender non-conforming people through portraits of their vulvas.
I highly encourage you, my dear reader, to read Me and My Vulva: 100 Women Reveal All, an article featured in The Guardian. Laura has also published a book, Womanhood: The Bare Reality.
