Here is Why I Don't Work with Children or Teens!
Dr. Z explains why she doesn't work with children, teenagers, and young adults. She's getting a lot of minors looking at her content and people wanting her to work with their kids, even though her biography says she only works with adults and her channel is marked as adult content only.
The reason Dr. Z doesn't work with minors is NOT because she doesn't believe younger individuals (even children) struggle with gender dysphoria. She wants to make it super clear—she thinks gender dysphoria can manifest as young as four years old. That's just a fact.
The reason she doesn't work with that population is because she doesn't have experience with it and isn't competent. In her personal opinion, a clinician working with children needs to have a background in children's developmental psychology. People developmentally go through different stages of life, and it's important to be very well versed in those stages. While she covered those stages in undergraduate and graduate studies, for 14 years she's been primarily focusing on adults. Her lens is very sharp and in tune with adult experiences, so she's completely out of bounds to be competent with minors.
Every single video Dr. Z has produced arises out of the vastness of her experience with adults only. People she works with in private practice tend to be between age 25 to 70. By the time people come into her office, they've lived their life, been through different stages of development, and had relational experiences (intimate, sexual, collaborative). They come to her for two reasons: (1) to get affirmation that it's really a case of gender dysphoria or not, and (2) "I want to transition, how do I do this, help me guide me through this."
