Is Hip Dysphoria Real?

Hip dysphoria is incredibly common—but we don't talk about it. Dr. Z addresses the reality of individuals struggling and suffering with hip dysphoria, whether you identify as trans fem, trans masculine, or non-binary.

One reason we don't hear about hip dysphoria as frequently: for those trying to masculinize or present non-binary, people talk more about chest dysphoria because it's more accessible—insurance is more likely to cover top surgery versus body contouring procedures. Hip modification falls under body contouring, which most insurance doesn't cover. They're more likely to cover genital surgery, breast augmentation, and mastectomy procedures.

As a result, we're not even aware how many individuals actually struggle with hip dysphoria. Some people report their hip area gives them MORE distress than their chest. Hips are stereotypically gendered, right there, visible, and difficult to hide. Even with hormone treatment, there's only so much change adults will experience in body structure.

Watch to find out what you can do if struggling with hip dysphoria, why Dr. Z wanted to vocalize this for providers and individuals who finally feel heard, and why this matters for understanding how dysphoria affects different body parts differently.
