Motivational Tip | Stop Yo Yo Transitioning!

Adults yo-yo their transition constantly—Dr. Z explains why this pattern is destructive and how to maintain commitment and momentum instead.

What yo-yoing looks like: You start hormones and feel better, dysphoria goes down. You take another step like coming out to family. Then you yo-yo back—you freak out, catastrophize about what else you'll have to do, and stop everything. You stop hormones completely or stop taking necessary steps. You start and stop, start and stop continuously.

Sometimes stopping hormones is beneficial—when you stop, dysphoria comes back stronger because you've experienced contrast. This helps you understand how important transition is. What's not good is continuously yo-yoing throughout the entire duration of your transition.

Why yo-yoing never works: You're psychologically learning how to not stick to something important. You're habituating the pattern of not following through on the most essential thing for yourself. The longer you yo-yo, the harder it becomes to commit.

Watch to find out why creating a vision board helps you commit to your authentic gender's energy, why you should maintain at least some elements of transition even when scared (don't go cold turkey), and why momentum is everything—stay in the game even if you slow down.
