The Link Between Depression, Anxiety and Gender Dysphoria!

Dr. Z explains the intricate link between anxiety, depression, and gender dysphoria. It's so common she hasn't seen anyone struggling with dysphoria who doesn't have some element of anxiety or depression—they exist in a "polyamorous relationship" together.

Understanding depression: There's a spectrum. Clinical depression is a chemical imbalance (low serotonin, neurological issues) causing inability to feel pleasure, happiness, excitement—severe cases mean can't get out of bed or maintain hygiene. Situational depression means feeling depressed because of a particular situation, like losing your job. You're temporarily depressed around that situation, but can function elsewhere.

Gender dysphoria causes situational depression and anxiety. When you're uncomfortable with how the world sees and genders you, you avoid social situations, causing discomfort. Isolation increases, and social anxiety increases. More anxiety means more isolation means more depression—a vicious cycle. Ask yourself: Do I feel anxious when I go out? What causes it? People misgender me. Do I feel anxious at home with supportive people? No.

Best treatment: Exercise (20-30 minutes daily) increases endorphins and serotonin. Don't add pharmaceuticals when you're already starting hormones.
