5 Red Flags to Watch Out For in a Gender Therapist!

Dr. Z shares five red flags to watch out for when looking for a gender therapist. Many people use the term "gender therapist" or "gender psychologist" to market themselves, but not everyone who uses those words is being honest regarding integrity or actually focuses on gender issues.

The five red flags include: using the term "gender therapist" but having absolutely nothing on their website or social media—no blog posts, videos, or content about gender-diverse individuals (if someone says they're a gender specialist, there ought to be something showing their expertise); sitting there using language and abbreviated terms that should be very familiar to them (like "FFS" or "enby"), but they're asking you what those mean and you have to educate them on concepts they should know; taking forever—three months, six months—to refer you to gender-affirming care you're ready for and need; telling you they don't know how to write gender evaluation letters needed for surgery or insurance and referring you elsewhere; and working with them for years but getting nowhere near your goals—maybe five, ten, even twenty years without even starting hormones.

Watch to learn how to identify therapists who misrepresent their expertise and waste your valuable time and money.
