Older Adults! Why Dysphoria Won't Let You Sleep!
Dr. Z answers one of the most common questions older adults ask: why is it now that I became aware I'm struggling with gender dysphoria and feel I need to do something about it? Or for those aware of dysphoria for majority of their life but able to deal with it—why suddenly now do you feel like you need to do something about it?
The common theme for both groups: the need to do something about it. Where does this need come from? Why now such a strong urge? Why thinking about transition, hormones, gender-affirming surgeries when you've been doing fine living life, coping with it, or just being aware of it?
The answer: current awareness of transgender care and accessibility, combined with accessibility to information platforms, internet, and social media. Gender-affirming care is very much in the forefront—written about constantly, talked about all the time, everywhere. More providers, surgeons, and clinicians focus solely on this field. More people have come out, sought gender-affirming care, and shared their experiences on social platforms.
The critical point: your brain is now open to the possibility that life with minimal or dysphoria-free existence is possible and gender-affirming care is accessible. Once your brain knows there's a solution to a problem, it will fixate on it.
Watch to understand why this urgency is natural and what it means.
