Self-Hatred or Something More? Identifying Gender Dysphoria!
Dr. Z shares how self-loathing and self-disdain are for some individuals another way to mask what really is an underlying core issue—gender dysphoria. Just to be very clear: just because somebody is experiencing loathing, a very deep-seated sense of insecurity and disdain towards oneself does not of course mean they're struggling with gender dysphoria. It does not mean they're transgender.
Dr. Z is speaking to particular situations where for individuals who also struggle with gender dysphoria, how self-loathing can be a very essential clue, a very essential sign that a deeper issue (in this case dysphoria) is not being addressed. She thinks a lot of you will resonate with this because it is so common and so prevalent in transgender community. For a lot of you who already know you are transgender, you're going to realize how for some of you the self-loathing, the history of self-loathing and self-disdain kept you back from yourself, kept you back from acknowledging yourself.
Self-loathing often times (almost a lot of times) goes hand in hand with gender dysphoria—the way depression and anxiety tend to go with gender dysphoria, also the same way a lot of addictions tend to go with dysphoria.
Watch this video as Dr. Z addresses why self-loathing starts to mask the underlying issue and why you find yourself chasing the next thing, hoping it will make you stop hating yourself.
