Stop Waiting for Motivation to Transition!
Stop waiting for motivation to transition—Dr. Z explains why this concept sabotages you and why motivation never comes before you start.
Here's the reality: the more you know about transition—the pros, cons, stories of people who detransitioned, how challenging it is—the less motivated you'll be. You're hearing scary things: you'll lose everyone, end up homeless, make mistakes. Because we're risk-averse and want to avoid pain, you sabotage yourself by saying "I'll do it when I get motivated," knowing deep down that motivation will never come.
Show one person who woke up thinking "I'm so motivated to transition!" By far and large, people transition because distress got so strong they couldn't bear it anymore—dysphoria pushed them against the wall. That's not motivation. That's hitting rock bottom with dysphoria where you can't deal with it anymore. You do so many things without motivation—taking out garbage, daily chores—because you have to. Gender dysphoria is also something you have to deal with, but society hasn't taught us that yet.
Watch to find out why motivation comes through the process after you take action, how starting hormones or coming out creates relief that motivates you to keep going, and why thinking about huge scary transition goals paralyzes you instead of focusing on small affirming steps.
