Trans Identity Does Not Always Equal Transition!
Dr. Z talks about whether you should transition if you identify as trans.
She sees this question all the time in the comment section. A lot of people comment something like: "I think I'm trans but I'm so scared of starting hormones" or "I think I'm trans but I'm afraid of surgeries" or "I think I'm trans and now I have to transition."
There's a lot of apprehension, anxiety, fear, and confusion. What's starting to be quite evident is that people assume just because they're trans-identified, that means they must transition.
Let Dr. Z be very clear: if you identify as transgender, it does NOT mean you must transition. Transgender is a huge umbrella term—underneath we have people who are trans binary (trans men and trans women), nonbinary, genderqueer, trans feminine, trans masculine, and so on. Everybody keeps using the word "trans" or "transgender" and it can be confusing what it really applies to or means.
Watch to find out what being trans really means (not comfortable with body/gender expression/gender role in relationship to assigned gender at birth), why trans doesn't equal transition, how to figure out who's standing underneath the umbrella, and why you should take it slow.
