Why You Go Through Narcissistic Inflation During Transition!
Dr. Z discusses what she calls the "narcissistic bubble"—temporary self-indulgence, egocentrism, self-absorption that happens during transition. This is NOT an indication trans people are narcissists. It's temporary ego inflation—like your ego is a balloon that gets inflated and eventually comes back down to earth.
When does it happen? Different phases for different people—when starting hormones and feeling better, when seeing changes on hormones, after surgeries (FFS, FMS, top surgery). Sometimes, there are multiple bubbles throughout the transition. All humans experience narcissistic bubbles in other life areas—completing a book, reaching weight goals. For you, it happens during transition.
Why it happens: You're starting to feel good about yourself for the first time, getting excited about life, thinking about possibilities. All you think about is yourself—"look at my outfit, my nails, my soft skin, my facial hair coming in"—ME ME ME. You become the center of your universe. This is normal and important because you need to realize your potential.
Watch to find out how this affects relationships when partners witness the bubble, why it's frustrating for people adjusting to your transition, and how to be mindful while still enjoying this beautiful space.
