Motivational Tip | Stop Listening to Others!

You're giving everyone your pen—Dr. Z explains why you need to stop listening to everyone else and own your story.

Every day you're writing a chapter in your life story. Everything is a story—telling people about your gender, making decisions about transition, choosing your name and pronouns. It's important to have ownership of your story script. But when you listen to everyone around you—people saying you can't be trans because you don't have childhood memories, people on social media claiming you're not trans enough—you're literally taking your script and giving them penmanship. You're saying "go ahead and write what you think this chapter should be."

You constantly walk through life giving your story to hundreds of people—friends, family—to write how they think you should behave, look, and present yourself. Result? A completely messed-up story. When everyone watches the movie of your life, it's a story of thousands of people and their projective perceptions—not a story of who you are or want to be.

Watch to find out the difference between seeking advice and blindly following it, why you need to exercise discernment, and why your pen is your power and decision-making agency.
