Trans Enough? Is There Such a Thing?
Dr. Z talks about what she calls transgender police and trans policing.
She sees a lot of people on social media (especially on Facebook) who like to chime in when somebody posts something about their personal life—they go out of their way to point out that person is "not trans enough."
This concept of "trans enough" and what is trans enough has been floating around for a while. It's very predominant and still a very important concept in trans community.
What is "trans enough"? Let Dr. Z be very super clear as somebody who specializes in gender dysphoria and as a clinical psychologist: there is no such thing as trans enough. It doesn't exist.
The reason it doesn't exist is because we're talking about subjective sense of identity. We're talking about your sense of who you are and how you see yourself. There's no way you can measure someone because they may not be undergoing some certain aspect of transition. You can't say somebody's not trans enough because they decided not to have facial feminization or masculinization, or because their gender dysphoria symptoms are mild versus severe.
Watch to find out why trans enough doesn't exist and why we need compassion.
