What's The Difference Between Acceptance vs Support?

Dr. Z talks about acceptance versus support—there's actually a difference, and there is a fundamental big difference between the two.

The idea to discuss this topic came around when she had somebody stay around after one of her support groups. This individual expressed struggle coming out to their parent and their parent not really demonstrating any kind of acceptance and support. That led to this discussion: the difference between acceptance versus support. She thinks this is a really great topic to talk about because sometimes we don't really think about these differences, but there are differences.

As we know, when we're transitioning and especially when we're coming out, a lot of us really seek that acceptance and support because it's important for us to feel like we belong, to feel like we're loved, and to have familial support in order to move on with our transitions. A lot of times people get really heartbroken and frustrated when they don't get acceptance and support.

Dr. Z would like to explain that they do fall into two different categories.

Watch to find out the difference and why understanding it matters.
