Is Gender Transition a Linear Process?
Dr. Z discusses the process of gender transition—specifically whether it is a linear process, meaning happening in accordance to stages such as social transition, hormone transition, surgical, and so on and so forth.
As discussed in her previous videos, gender transition is a multi-stage process. Some of the stages include: social transition (coming out to loved ones and family, starting to express yourself in your true gender—dressing in preferred clothing, choosing a name), medical stage (starting hormones if that's what you choose to do), legal stage (process of changing name and gender marker on all legal documents), and finally surgical stage (again for those people who do decide to have surgery, which in of itself can vary from one to two or three surgical procedures).
As you can see, not only is transition itself a set of so-called stages, but within those stages there are micro-stages.
The question is: is gender transition a linear process? More importantly, what happens if one doesn't go through all of the stages?
Watch to find out why gender transition is not a linear process—it's personal and individualized.
