Potential Dangers of Social Media
Dr. Z talks about dangers of social media—not all social media is bad, but she sees a lot of warning signs and red flags out there.
First, Dr. Z wants to be very clear: she fully knows the medical community (people like herself, mental health providers, medical doctors, endocrinologists) have failed trans community for a long time. Some still continue to fail. She feels really bad for colleagues who aren't stepping up, specializing in this field, or providing informative top-notch information trans people deserve to empower themselves with. To this day, many mental health providers play the role of gatekeepers. When people hear mental health providers talking about transgender care, the initial response is to mistrust—she totally gets where it's coming from.
Having said that, nothing is going to be more supportive than trans community out there—people going through the exact same experiences. While experts may know a lot from research and observation, trans community is going through that experience firsthand.
Your community can be very vital for support and advice. But Dr. Z wants to caution you big time. Here come the dangers of social media.
Watch to find out why you need to take everything with grain of salt and do your own homework.
